When the eighth graders leave the middle school, they are nervous about moving to the high school. Here are a few tips to make the transition easier.
At the end of the eighth grade year, most eighth graders must say goodbye to their teachers and the building that they have been accustomed to for the last three-to-four years. It is a scary time, but it is also an exciting one as well. Choosing the Right ClassesWhen scheduling classes for the freshman year, take time to really research the classes and make wise choices. Parents and students need to pour over the class offerings to make a good schedule. Schedules can be changed, but it is much easier if no changes need to be made. In addition, it helps if students know what type of training or school they want to attend after high school. It is important to get into the right “track.” For students who want to attend a four year college, they need to be in college preparatory classes. If students take general classes, they may not be prepared for the rigor of college and may have to take remedial classes in college that do not count towards their degree. Another choice that students will have to make is one of electives. Some middle schools do not offer them. Students can take classes that focus on journalism, wood working, ancient Egypt, film, yearbook publication, web design, etc. The freshman year is a great time to experiment and try out different electives. Visit the New BuildingTo calm students' nerves, a visit to the high school is in order. Most school districts take students to the high school for a visit at the end of their eighth grade year. And, most schools also have a freshman orientation for parents and students before the freshman year begins. However, many students are still unsure about moving into the new building. Many schools allow students to come in with parents over the summer and walk around to find classrooms. Parents and students can walk the halls together and find all of the rooms on the schedule. This is best if it happens a few weeks before school begins. Join Extra Curricular ActivitiesOne way to get involved at the high school and make new friends is to join a club or play a sport. If one is not athletically gifted, there are clubs for about any interest, such as drama, dance, chess, trivia, photography, community service, etc. These clubs have a mix of grades and offer leadership opportunities that can be listed on scholarship applications. Students entering high school are usually nervous. This is normal. However, to have a great start to a high school year, students need to make good schedules, tour the building and join a club or play a sport. Make high school a memorable not a nightmare.
